Positive Confessions start with a Positive Outlook

Pastor Jim Huthmaker

You are what you think

Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he. The key issue in walking through the Christian life is renewing our minds. We are controlled out of what we think about. Who controls our thinking? We do. We control our thinking through 2 ways- by our flesh or by the Spirit of God. We are a spirit, soul and body and we have senses.

Live by God’s Spirit instead of by your flesh

Isaiah 55: 8-9 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. 9For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. God’s ways, thoughts and provisions for us are so much greater than our own. God’s thoughts are His word, the Bible. When we are submitting to God, when we are into God’s word, that’s the mind of Christ. We need to have the mind of Christ and not the mind of carnality, the flesh.

Romans 8:5-6 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit, 6For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. As believers, we have a choice to think in line with our flesh(five senses) or to think in line with the Spirit of God. The choice is ours in how we are led and in what we are led by. We have to submit ourselves to God. If we are submitting to the flesh and not to God we can not do what God wants us to do.

Present you body by renewing your mind

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

We have to continuously renew our mind. If we are going to be led by the Spirit of God, we have to put away the old person. You can’t be led by the flesh and be led by the Spirit of God at the same time, it can’t work. We must be yielded to the Spirit of God.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. This is the way to live. We are to think and meditate on positive things at all times.

3 enemies that God’s people face

The world

The devil

Our flesh

The devil, the enemy works through our flesh. The world works through our flesh.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Being a carnal Christian

1 Corinthians 3:1-3 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.3For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

How can someone be a Christian and still commit sin? It is because their mind is not renewed. Your mind becomes renewed through the Word.

We should get to a point in our lives where our flesh is not dictating what we do everyday but our spirit is dictating what we are doing on the inside and what we are doing on the outside. Our lives should not be dictated by our flesh.

Psalm 66:18-19 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me: 19But verily God hath heard me; he hath attended to the voice of my prayer. If we know we have sin in our heart, all we have to be is repentive.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

There are 2 areas of the flesh: Strength and Weakness

When a person is carnal, they are under the control of the flesh. The flesh is never neutral, either you are doing something good or you are doing something bad.

Moral sin- good people that sin

There are good people who sin. People think they can repent of their sins and go sin again. People misunderstand the grace message. Because Jesus died for our past, present and future sins, people will take that and say so what does it matter about sinning. If you truly have a repentance heart and you love God, you’re not going to want to sin again. It’s the love of God in us that we have.

How to be free: The way to get free from carnality

Galatians 5:16-18 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Christianity is not doing, it is being.

Ephesians 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

Follower means to imitate, to mimic.

Ephesians 5: 8, 11, 14 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 11And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. 18 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

This is a comparison of a carnal Christian and a sinner. There are people who are asleep among the dead. The carnal Christian is sleep among dead people. We should have a heart for people and a love for people in which when should go out and share God’s word in love and as a result people can arise and find the destiny that God has for them.

Christ gives us light. Christ promotes us. Christ moves us. It is through His light. When you see corrupt things going on, negative activity going on you don’t see a whole bright light. When good things are going on, light is shining.

Jesus is our light. He is our shining light.

Isaiah 60:1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.

We can not be asleep among the dead. We have to be changing everyday. We have to grow in the Word everyday in which we are changed. The Word changes us.
