What is Faith?

Faith

Pastor Jim Huthmaker

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

You can not have faith without hope. What is hope? Hope is a positive imagination. Hoping is just not wishing.

There are 2 kinds of faith:  Spiritual and Natural

Abraham had spiritual faith. Romans 4:17-21, Galatians 3:7-14, 18, 23, 29

We have the promises of Abraham. All we have to do is believe it, receive it, and step out in it. God’s word says we all have the measure of faith (Romans 12:3).

Salvation comes from a spiritual type of faith. Romans 10:9-11, 13

Thomas had natural faith. “I believe it when I see it” John 20:24-29

This natural kind of faith is based upon our bodies and our souls. Our soul consists of our mind, will and emotions, which is what a lot of people are led by every day.

Hindrances to faith

1. Lack of knowledge of God’s word.

We have to build a relationship. We must study God’s word and spend time in the bible.

Faith comes by hearing the word of God. Romans 10:17

We have to get knowledge of who God is. 2 Peter 1:2-3, 5-6, 8

People are destroyed by a lack of knowledge. Hosea 4:6

2. Unworthiness

People do not feel that they are worthy of coming to God. Many people do not believe they are good enough to receive from God. People think if they could just build up enough esteem it will happen. We should have Christ esteem, our esteem should be through our Savior, our creator. Many people have an identity crisis because they are counting on themselves, their self worth. People do not believe they are worthy of God. God does not love us based on our worthiness. It is through Jesus, no one is worthy through their own right. If we feel unworthy, we are denying what our Lord and Savior Jesus did for us. He became our sacrifice.

It is not through our works, it is through what Jesus has done for us. Ephesians 2:10, Ephesians 4:24, 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
