Our authority in Christ

Our authority in Christ

Pastor Jim Huthmaker

There are two spiritual forces in the world. There’s good and bad. One is positive and one is negative. Good things are from God and bad things are from the enemy.

All authority comes from God

Genesis 1:26-28 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.  28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Dominion means rulership. It means authority. God gave dominion, power and authority to man through Adam and Eve.

Psalm 8:3-9 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;  4What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 5For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. 6Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: 7All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;  8The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth 9O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

God upholds all things by the power of his words. How powerful is a word? God created everything with the spoken word. He spoke it in existence with authority, with power. A negative word can have a negative affect on a person, a positive word can have a positive affect on a person.

God never violates his word. Things would self destruct if he violated his word. He created the earth and everything with the spoken word. The authority that God gave us in the beginning and is today so strong and so vast it limited him. It limited him not because he doesn’t have the power but because of the integrity of his word, God can not go back on his word.

Psalm 89:34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

We have authority over the earth.

Psalm 115:16 The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD's: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.

God placed no restrictions on the authority He gave to man. He placed no clause of termination on the contract He made with us. He bound Himself to us.

How does God use us? God uses people, but only when we want to be used.

Ephesians 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

God is no longer at work. God has done everything through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and has given it to us. It all functions through Jesus.

Where did the enemy’s power come from?

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

The enemy works through people.

Did you know that there is not one place in scripture that says we are to pray against the devil? Have you ever found yourself praying against the devil, praying against the wiles of this world; the negative things of this world? You will not find scripture in the Old or New Testament that says to pray against the devil. God has done everything that He could do through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. There is nothing else that He can do. He has given us our authority back.

Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:  20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

The church already has authority over the enemy.

Mark 16:15-19 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

One can’t resist something that he doesn’t have authority over. We have authority over all things on this planet however we don’t look at it that way. Every believer has the same authority. Its believing, receiving and stepping out and acting on that authority.

Ephesians 4:27 Neither give place to the devil.

The devil, the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). The devil can’t take place in your life unless you allow him to do that.

The book of Ephesians tells you nearly everything you need to know about your authority.

Ephesians 1:4, 6-7 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

It is through Jesus that he loves us. We are shameless. We are without blame before him and the foundations of love. 6To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. 7In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Sin should not be a focus for us today. The enemy wants us to focus on negative things. Your past, present and future tense sins have been forgiven.

This is a prayer to the Ephesians and to us.

Ephesians 1:15-23 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, 16Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; 17That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, 20Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:  22And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,23Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

God has given us wisdom, to discern and understand what we should be doing in this life. He has given us revelation in the knowledge of Him.

Ephesians 2:4-5, 8, 10 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

We have authority through the grace we have through Jesus.

I would encourage you to read through Ephesians and every time you see “ in him,  in whom”, and terms like that its talking about us. Its talking about Jesus working through us and who we are in Christ and how important that is.
